Our Story
If anyone knows America is the land of opportunity, it’s Joe Okeke. Okeke came to America from Nigeria to pursue a university degree. Arriving in California, making his way through Texas, and ending up in Arkansas, he actually picked up a few degrees over the years. Now, after a successful career as an entrepreneur in commercial banking computer technology, Okeke has a new American dream: He hopes to make his newly developed line of Nigerian stew a world-wide household name.
Okeke’s new dream gave life to his new business, Product Invention, Innovation, and Research Development (PiiRD). He began his new enterprise by producing a prototype of his first product with the assistance of the Arkansas Food Innovation Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He then worked with the USDA and FDA to gain approval for production, labeling and distribution. Okeke is now beginning to manufacture his first product line, called Omenyi Classic Stew.
The stew is named after his grandmother who cooked this recipe for him as a child in Nigeria. Okeke said this type of stew has existed for centuries, but he is transforming it to fit the needs of health-conscious consumers who crave home-cooked meals. He has eliminated some of the fattening ingredients of the original recipe, which should make the stew even more marketable to consumers.
Omenyi Classic Stew is easy to serve and goes well with a host of dishes, said Okeke. In Nigeria, this stew is very complex to cook, but he has taken the frustration out of the equation by offering an easy-to-serve, packaged version for consumers. The newly developed stew joins the traditions of Okeke’s homeland with the modern consumer’s needs, he said.
Okeke is currently working with HNO Blending Solutions in Fordyce, Arkansas to manufacture a vegetarian line of his stew. He plans to keep his production Arkansas based, because he loves the people and the scenic beauty of the Natural State.
During his time at University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Okeke fell deeply in love with the land around him. He’d never seen anything like it, having lived in large cities before settling in Arkansas. Okeke now hopes to grow his business in Arkansas like so many others have before him. He wants to source his produce from local Arkansas farmers, use Arkansas companies to manufacture his stew, and start selling to Arkansas consumers before anyone else.
Okeke hopes to soon have his product on grocery store shelves, but he has a bigger plan in mind too. He aims to have his stew produced in mass quantities to accommodate large facilities such as hospitals, schools, and prisons. His plans also include expanding his line of products to include a variety of stews. Okeke says the world may soon see his products online and available for in-store purchases as well.
Okeke came to America in search of education, and in doing so found his way into the food production business. Sweet childhood memories of a centuries-old Nigerian stew fueled his new American dream of manufacturing a healthy, convenient version of that same stew for families all over the world, starting in the great state of Arkansas.
